The plants and the trees bow down in prostration

Qur’an, The Merciful (Ar Rahman) 55:6

The purpose behind this initiative is to educate children about the importance of trees and forests to life on earth. Trees are now felled by the million ostensibly to support our life styles. You may think there is no connection between the forests that are destroyed and yourself but look around your home your street and the building sites where you live and try and reflect on where the wood could have come from.

More than fifty percent of the human population on the planet now live in cities and children are now increasingly distanced from the habitats that were once very familiar to past generations. This project is about going beyond the class room and the science lab and about making connections between our life styles and the impact our behaviour has on the natural world. Forests function as a total regulatory and supply system for the planet.

Some of their major functions are to act as collectors of water that eventually become rivers, control climate by the moisture they generate, stabilize climate by absorbing solar radiation, act as store houses for carbon dioxide and prevent erosion by locking the soil together. Forests also act as hosts to millions of animal and vegetable species. There is a dazzling unity and coherence in this very diversity of creation. Though much of this flora and fauna are unknown to us, they collectively contribute to the well being of the planet and benefit humankind.
